Pupils at Priory Infant School in Ramsgate have been building confidence and essential life skills through their participation in Scootability, a programme designed to help children ride their scooters safely and responsibly.

During a 90-minute session, children developed both their practical abilities and their understanding of scooter safety. They learned about the different parts of a scooter, the importance of wearing appropriate safety gear, and how to maintain balance, control and confidence while riding. Pupils also practised key techniques such as pushing, steering and stopping safely, as well as carefully navigating obstacles.

As their skills progressed, so too did their awareness of the world around them. Children explored how to ride safely on busy pavements, learned the correct ways to cross roads, and considered how to approach blind corners with caution. A strong emphasis was placed on keeping themselves and others safe, helping to instil a sense of responsibility alongside their growing independence. The session also included a selection of fun trick skills, adding an extra element of enjoyment to the day.

Headteacher Clare Sellwood said: “Opportunities like Scootability are invaluable for our pupils. Not only are they developing important physical skills, but they are also learning how to stay safe and be aware of others in their community. It’s wonderful to see their confidence and independence grow.”

The session took place in the school playground, where staff were delighted to see pupils supporting one another and embracing the experience with enthusiasm.

Sports lead Steve Holmes added: “The children made fantastic progress in a short space of time. Seeing them build confidence, improve their control and develop a real understanding of safety has been brilliant. Most importantly, they had great fun while learning skills that will stay with them.”
